The best known Japanese haiku is Basnos "old pond" haiku: Furuike ya kawazu tobikomu mizu no oto -- Basho This separates into on as: furuike ya Fu-ru (old) i-ke (pond) ya kawazu tobikomu ka-wa-zu (frog) to-bi-ko-mu (jumping into) mizu no oto mi-zu (water) no o-to (sound) Translated: old pond . . . a frog leaps in sound of water.
